This is a great idea; I bet the the hardest thing was to keep people from wanting to buy or trade who *want* something! People are happy to give stuff away, but many feel a little weird at first taking something for free when the could afford to pay for it.

If folks want to do this on an item by item basis, they can check out http://www.freecycle.org and give/get things via an email group; we have SGVFreecycle at yahoogroups.com here in town.

Also, I bet the City would get behind this as a waste reduction system . . .

What a great idea! It tickles me that UnHip LA labeled it “Bay Area-ish sounding.” Not in SOME parts of the Bay Area! But it’s totally something that would fly here in granola-land.
