Mysterious red ant wasp

I’ve never seen an ant like this before.
It was the size of a honeybee, but it had no wings. It was red and furry.
It was in Altadena.

Bulgarini Gelato opened shop this weekend in Altadena, and gelato was free all day. (Thanks to erin’s kitchen for the tip.) It was delicious.
